Friendswood is the more suburban, and often referred to as the rural area of Houston. The area was founded by Quakers, who still have a strong presence in the community which is located on the Gulf Freeway. Nearly 30,000 people live in the area, which features a smaller subdivision where wooded homes and dwellings are prevalent. Water front properties, with most having a private landing strip, and dock, are the high end and most coveted pieces of real estate in the city. Friendswood is also located near the Hobby Airport, and Ellington Air Base. Webster offers a small town feel, with a large variety of specialty retail shops, recreation opportunities for families, and restaurants. This area is often visited by tourists, and is known as the "Webster Gateway". A shopping, art, gourmet food, raft, book, and fine jewelry stores create a unique community, with an upscale atmosphere. Taylor Lake Village is a bedroom community, and is known as the address to have if interested in water activities. El Lago is located next tot Taylor Lake, with the two areas sharing a police and fire department, and are known as a low crime residential area. El Lago was the home of Jean Lafitte's Pirates, and is home to nearly 4,000 residents. The area has been home to several astronauts due to the nearness of NASA. Seabrook is situated near Clear Lake, and Galveston Bay. The area has a population of just under 10,000, and is zoned for control in the business growth arena. Many specialty shops are on hand for residents, with watching for pelicans on a warm day a favorite pastime activity. An open air market known as "Back Bay Market" is adorned with monuments to pelicans, and is open the second weekend of each month for shopping and dining. Nassau Bay is located near Johnson Space Center, and near the Christus -St. John Hospital. The Arts Alliance of Clear Lake, along with many popular shopping and entertainment venues are located in this picturesque, and high end area of Houston. League City in near the south shore of Clear Lake, and is one of the fastest growing sections of the area. Nearly 60,000 people live in League City, which features many restored homes, and tea rooms. Helen's Park, a small, yet beautifully detailed park is near the center of the community, which also boasts large Oak trees, amid the antique, book, and collectibles stores. Kemah is home to less than 2,000 people, and is often referred to as the "Waterfront District" of Houston. Art galleries, restaurants, and specialty shops are but a few of what makes the small area of Kemah an popular locations. Ornate water gardens, energetically themed eateries, and family style amusements draw both new residents, and visitors to the area. NORTH HOUSTON Communities which comprise the north area of Houston include: Spring, The Woodlands, and Conroe. SPRING - This section of northern Houston is primarily a suburban atmosphere, with a high quality of life for those who enjoy the nearness of the downtown area, without the hustle and bustle of urban life. The area is near the major employment sections of downtown, The Woodlands, and the George Bush Inter-Continental Airport. The Woodlands - Five separate villages comprise the area known as The Woodlands, and are interconnected by what is described as an 80 mile greenbelt. Nearly one third of the area is preserved for green spaces, and public parks. A large industrial and commercial center is situated within the area, along Interstate 45. The center is separated into three specific sections: Town Center, Trade Center, and the Research Forest. Conroe boasts a population of just under 25,000, and is a high end section of the city. Most homes are situated on multi-acre plots of land, with horses or other livestock also calling the area home. Single family, brick or wood frame homes typically range in price of just $40,000 up to one million dollars. Lake Conroe is the prime source of recreation for this community, which is located approximately 35 miles from downtown Houston. The lake is 21,000 acres large, and is a popular site for water skiing, fishing, and boating. SCHOOLS Families in the area are served by the Conroe Independent School district. Low student to teacher ratios, programs for students with physical and learning disabilities, as well as gifted programs, vocational education, and advanced science, make the schools very successful when evaluated on standardized tests, and by the State of Texas. All 11 of the public schools which comprise the Woodlands area District have been rated exemplary, and been recognized by the Texas Education Agency. A private school, the Woodlands Christian Academy provides services for grades K-12 students. SHOPPING The major shopping malls in Houston include: Greenspoint, The Galleria Mall, Northwest Mall, Northline Mall, and The Woodland's Mall. Smaller specialty and unique gift shops are found in all of the city's neighborhoods. ATTRACTIONS Major attractions, and points of interest in the north side of Houston include: Laser Quest, Saint Arnold Brewing Company, Champions Golf Club, Military Museum of Texas, Ziegen Bock Festival, Champions Paintball, Jersey Meadow Golf Course, Water Wall, Children's Museum of Houston, Space Center of Houston, Houston Zoo, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Asian American Festival, and the Houston Holocaust Museum, Museum of Fine Art. EAST - WEST Communities which comprise the section of Houston include: West Loop - Galleria, Tanglewood, Broad Oaks, The Villages, Memorial, West Memorial, and Katy, are the most popular areas of the western area of Houston, In the eastern section, many residents work at the nearby Port of Houston or surrounding chemical plants or commute to downtown. Northshore is also a growing residential area in the more eastern section of Houston, which includes subdivisions such as Cimarron, Home Owned Estates, Hidden Forest and Woodforest. The Katy area of the city is thirty miles from the downtown hub, and has a stated small town feel. The area is zoned, with sections specified for specific retail and business locations. Subdivisions of Del Monte and Briarcroft are more affordably priced for the area, with Larchmont featuring the most high end homes and apartments. The area is a quiet section, yet not quite suburban in nature, but boasts a low crime rate, and older professional type residents. The eastern section of the city plays a prime role in the important trade and industrial businesses of Houston, and the region. The location is beneficial to such trade due to the proximity of the Port of Houston. The industry-based communities in are situated just outside Loop 610 East, along I-10 East, giving residents a short commute to the downtown area. San Jacinto College District's North Campus. Baytown, draws a large number of students, and professional educators to the eastern section of the city, as well as a well landscaped green space of the community to enjoy.
