A               Master               of               Education               degree               is               a               postgraduate               degree               usually               pursued               by               educators               to               advance               in               their               field               or               to               obtain               professional               licensure.

The               requirements               generally               include               core               classes               in               a               concentration               or               a               specialized               branch               of               education.

Specialties               and               Concentrations
               A               Master               of               Education               degree               can               be               a               general               education               degree               but               most               often               it               is               specialized.

Choosing               an               area               of               concentration               should               be               considered               as               it               will               determine               employment               possibilities               and               options.

Some               areas               of               specializations               are               Educational               Leadership,               subject               specific               such               as               Reading               Instruction,               Administration,               Teaching               and               Learning,               Online               College               Teaching,               Elementary               or               Early               Childhood               Education,               Counseling,               Curriculum               and               Instruction,               Neuroscience               Interdisciplinary,               Academic               Enrichment,               Student               Affairs,               Adult               Education,               Instructional               Technology               or               preparation               for               a               Ph.D               or               Doctorate.
               Requirements
               Most               Master               of               Education               degrees               are               for               educators               who               have               teacher               certification               or               a               bachelor's               degree               with               teacher               certification               or               a               bachelor's               degree               in               a               specific               field               in               which               the               teacher               is               working               or               teaching.

Additionally,               in               most               states               Master               of               Education               degrees               are               required               for               school               counselor               or               leadership               positions.

The               requirements               for               teaching               status               prior               to               attempting               to               get               a               Master               of               Education               degree               varies               by               state.
               Educational               Requirements
               A               Master               of               Education               degree               can               be               completed               educationally               in               a               number               of               ways.

College               graduates               can               opt               to               take               an               additional               year               of               coursework               with               intensive               student               teaching.

Other               programs               depending               on               experience,               school               or               state               requirements               may               only               require               as               little               as               fifteen               extra               credits.

The               master's               degree               in               education               is               a               general               education               degree               that               provides               a               base               for               continuing               education               and               specialization.
               Post               Graduate               Requirements
               After               completing               a               bachelor's               degree               students               may               need               to               pass               the               Graduate               Record               Examination               provided               by               the               Educational               Testing               Service.

Some               post-graduate               teacher               programs               may               require               when               applying,               a               statement               of               purpose,               letters               of               recommendations               from               professors               and               an               undergraduate               writing               sample.
               Online               or               On               Campus               Alternatives
               Master               of               Education               degrees               can               be               earned               through               alternative               programs               either               online               or               with               atypical               training               schedules.

These               programs               may               require               students               to               adapt               to               intense               schedules               with               a               willingness               to               work               independently               and               at               odd               hours.
               Example               Curriculum               Course
               An               example               of               course               requirements               for               a               Master               of               Education               degree               in               Mind,               Brain               and               Education               from               Harvard               as               a               one               year               program               includes:               One               year               long               course               on               cognitive               development,               education               and               the               brain,               one               overview               foundational               course               chosen               from               a               list               of               electives,               two               additional               courses               chosen               from               either               cognition               &               neuroscience,               learning               instruction               or               research               methods               &               assessment               and               three               elective               courses               taken               at               a               Harvard               or               MIT               school.
               Skills/Traits
               Though               not               required               by               state               or               national               standards               those               pursuing               a               Master               of               Education               degree,               according               to               All               Education               Schools,               might               consider               skills               and               traits               that               may               help               them               succeed.

Some               traits               or               skills               to               consider               include               having               patience,               flexibility,               common               sense,               the               ability               to               motivate               students               and               time               management               skills.
